Lycoming's roots trace to 1845 in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. The business moved into engine manufacture as the Lycoming Foundry and Machine Company in 1907 and focused on aviation from 1937, becoming AVCO Lycoming in 1939.
Textron acquired the company in 1985, and today Lycoming operates as a division of Avco Corporation, a subsidiary of Textron. It still manufactures in Williamsport, producing horizontally opposed, air-cooled four, six and eight-cylinder piston aircraft engines.
